Just 10 km south of da nang and 20 km north of hoi an in central vietnam is a small group of 5 mountains known the world over as the marble mountain s.

These abrupt mounds of limestone and marble are better defined as hills but their lack of altitude doesn t reflect them being unworthy of a visit. In vietnamese they are called nui ngu hanh son which translates to mountains of the five elements.

The view on the top of the mountain is marvellous worth the climb. I use the term mountains loosely. There will be no awards won or respect gained from your mountaineering friends for scaling these peaks but you will see some cool shrines temples pagodas and caves as well as some beautiful views over beaches and countryside. The crowds during the day will attest to this.

Marble mountains or ngu hanh son in vietnamese are open daily from 7am to 5 30pm. Outside or inside the mountain there are some stalls and shops selling marble stone or items made of marble i bought some. The mountains sheer porous limestone is punctuated by caves and tunnels which are fitted with spectacular buddhist and hindu shrines.
